Material things. We need them.
Whether you are a minimalist or maximalist or somewhere in between, living with the things that inspire and comfort, inform and enrich us, is one of life's pleasures.
Perhaps it's a favorite mug or pillow, a book read to you by a beloved grandparent, or the only known photograph of your father as a child. Or maybe it's a reproduction of a painting you spent hours staring at in a library, allowing yourself to be transported by its mystery and allure.
Whatever it is, we surround ourselves with things we love because they make our lives better. No one ever answers "Nothing" when asked what they'd save from a burning building. Our material lives are integral to who we are.
Founded by writer, editor, photography historian, and photographer Carla Williams, Material Life is retail store located on historic Bayou Road in New Orleans, Louisiana, featuring fine and decorative arts, books, apparel, vintage items, and other objects by black artists and designers, as well as select artists whose work highlights black subjects and culture.
